Mu Pan

Mu Pan (b. 1976, Taiwan, child of Chinese parents) emigrated to New York City, USA in 1997 when he was 21. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York where he graduated in 2007 with an M.F.A with honours: furthermore he holds a BFA in Illustration from School or Visual Arts.  Mu Pan asserts his multiple cultural identities in his paintings. He paints with acrylic on wood and paper. His works of great precision offer a narrative, often battle scenes that allow him to multiply the adventures. Mu Pan personalises the encounter of Hieronymus Bosch, Kuniyoshi and Marvel Comics, with his large epic and narrative paintings, references Japanese, Chinese and American pop culture. The new myths are marked by hybrid characters and elements of popular culture bordering on the cartoonish. His narrative paintings are also the pretext for acerbic social criticism of his host and native countries, on immigration, the gentrification of New York’s working class neighbourhoods or the new generation of young people in Taiwan. His more recent work allows him to develop a new form of narrative, and the creation of a pantheon of animal gods. Everywhere in his paintings, someone is being eaten by someone else.

Highlights and Awards
Mu Pan has been commissioned an image for the opening scene of the movie Midsommar by Ari Aster in 2019. Pan has also been commissioned for a main poster for the film “Catch Me Daddy” by Daniel and Matthew Wolfe. Mu Panhas been awarded with multiple prizes amongst them the Artist Wanted 3rd Ward Summer Open Call Grand Prize 2007 Catherine Rhodes Scholarship in 2011 and the MFA Illustration Departmen4t Merit Scholarship in 2006 and the Alumni Scholarship Award in 2001.
