‘Symposium’, a group exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, London explores the potential of food and eating as a social, cultural, political and artistic activity. In ancient Greece, a ‘symposium’ was a social gathering that involved feasting, drinking, conversation, music, dancing, poetry and entertainment. These banquets were held to mark a particular occasion, achievement or significant life event. In this show, contemporary artists are invited to reimagine the ‘symposium’ in the context of their own cultures and identities. What does the modern dinner party represent? Can it offer a platform for serious discussion, philosophical and radical thinking as well as a space for indulgence, pleasure and transgression?
